On Weights and Measures

Weight isn’t something I get really worked up about, but I thought it would be fun to see how much the frame I built weighs, along with some other frames and bikes I have at the house. So I borrowed a scale from my buddy Dan and then dorked out
New Frame: 4lbs 2 oz. New [...]

Doug Fattic’s Class: Day 1

Today was the first day of my time at Doug Fattic’s two week frame building class. Today was from what I can tell the most uneventful day as far as building, but interesting in terms of the history we learned and some of the things we learned about fitting. I’m a bit of an odd [...]

Progress continues on new road bike

Winter has come with a vengeance in Minnesota. Since a week before Christmas most of my cycling has been done either in Washington (holiday trip) or on a trainer. Once the whole family is back together (my wife has been out of the country for awhile) I’ll be commuting on my bike again. It will [...]

Frame building class & a new road bike

I’m taking a frame building class in February! I’m pretty excited and it should be a good time. I’m taking the class from Doug Fattic. My plan is to build a road go fast / all day rider kind of bike. Something with road angles, and maybe slightly longer than normal chain stays. The bike [...]

Sackville Saddlesack Large Review

I’ve been running around with a Large Sackille Saddlesack on my Hillborne for about six months now (serial number 41). I’ve got almost no complaints.
The Good:
Its fricken huge, like cavernous, this bag will eat other bags, and then more. I’ve been able to do our regular grocery run, a weeks worth of food for three [...]

3 months with my Sam Hillborne

So I’ve had the bike for awhile now. I’ve put about 2000ish miles on it so far. The bulk of that has been around town to and from work or the grocery store. I also did RAGBRAI, which about 450 miles over a week. Over all I’m pretty happy. I’m still working out the kinks [...]

Big dummy on a trunk rack

I had been wondering for awhile if we could fit Dave’s Big Dummy on a trunk rack. For RAGBRAI we were going to have to figure something out. We were able to make it work without too much trouble.
The rack we used was a Saris Bones Trunk Rackon a 2007 Nissan Altima. Dave and I [...]

Bike shipping sooner than expected

I just got an email from Rivendell that my Sam Hillborne will be shipping between April 13th and 18th. I’m super excited, hopefully since I just ordered a frame it will get here sooner than later and I’ll have it for the MN Ironman ride.

Anyone have suggestions for bags (front)?

I’m looking for a good front bag. I want something with a bit of style that isn’t the typical black nylon affair. Right now I’m leaning towards the baggins bar bag or the ostrich bag. I’m not in love with either, I like the functionality of the ostrich bag (especially the map window) but the [...]

Picking parts for my wheels II (spoke length)

In my last post I talked about picking the parts for the wheels. I glossed over one super important detail. Picking out the length of your spokes. Spokes are sold in all different sizes (and shapes as well). The size you need depends on what hub you are using and the rim you are using, [...]
